An author and teacher from Hemel Hempstead is celebrating after having his third book published.
Karl Vadaszffy is toasting the release of On Guard, which hit shelves on Friday and is set in the fencing world against the backdrop of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956.
The book, which Karl says has ‘already been favourably received’, is the Adeyfield author and former Astley Cooper School head teacher’s latest work and it has a lot to live up to.
It follows in the illustrious footsteps of his bestselling novel, The Missing, which to date has sold more than 60,000 copies.
Bestselling author Glenn Cooper said of the book: “On Guard has the style and pace of its subject - the cut-throat world of competitive fencing.
“Vadaszffy is fast becoming a significant, must-read British crime writer.”
Elizabeth Haynes, bestselling author of Into the Darkest Corner, said: “Masterful and thrilling, this is a book to devour – I found it impossible to leave alone.
“I love thrillers that take me into an unfamiliar world and make it real, and On Guard does exactly that.”
On Guard is currently being reviewed by bestselling authors Alex Marwood, Damien Lewis, Scott Phillips, CM Palov, William Ryan, Quentin Bates, Kerry Wilkinson – and Iron Maiden singer Bruce Dickinson.
On Guard is about ageing fencing master József Varga who escaped from Budapest, Hungary, during the Revolution of 1956.
Years later, female members of his fencing club are found dead, stabbed through with snapped fencing blades. Someone from his past is attempting to destroy his present.
His son, detective sergeant Michael Varga, himself a fencer, tries to unravel the mystery, while keeping the hidden jealousy he has for his distant father from emerging.
Karl said: “The book is inspired by my father’s escape from Budapest during the Revolution of 1956. After arriving in the UK, he (Zsolt) had a successful film acting career starring opposite the likes of Michael Caine, Sean Connery and Anthony Hopkins.
“He also had fencing competition success and was British Professional Epee Champion for five years running and coached the British Olympic Foil team.
“He was also the personal fencing coach to Iron Maiden’s Bruce Dickinson and film star Ralph Fiennes.”
On the book itself, Karl is hopeful for another success story.
He said: “The book is starting to be really well received. My previous work has been advocated by internationally bestselling authors so I hope it will do well.”
